What does an Arduino have in common with a Graphic Artist? The Power to create! With the Arduino platform, you can build a 3D printer, a CNC machine, a Quadcopter and more. You are limited only by your imagination.

Over the years Arduino has been the brain of thousands of projects. A worldwide community of makers – students, hobbyists, graphic artists, programmers, and professionals have taken this as an opportunity to create. To go beyond the norm. Makers love to share and this is no exception. Thousands of lines of code are available via Open Source. This makes creating something all that more fun. You can follow a step by step Instructable or build from scratch.

A SPARK has taken the plunge. Our first project was building a 3D Scanner with Infinite Resolution.

Our next project is yet to be determined. The possibilities are unlimited!

Imagine running across a guide online on “How to Build a 3D Scanner with Infinite Resolution” and your client is a 3D printing company. Well that is exactly how it happened. A SPARK was given the go ahead with a budget of $100.00 (excluding the DSLR).

The only limit is imagination!

The setup included an Arduino Mega board, a stepper motor, a stepper motor driver and misc wires and resistors …

The concept works like this: You have a turntable connected to the stepper motor, connected to the motor driver, connected to the Arduino. The Ardunio sends a signal to an IR Led which is attached to the IR sensor on a DSLR, the camera shoots once. The stepper motor advances one click. The Ardunio sends the IR signal again, the turntable rotates one click and so on. A full 360 rotation is completed. You can use this series of shots. For better results, you can shoot at different angles, from above, side views, from below. Once you have your 360 series of photographs, you simply load them into software that takes the 2D 360 images and converts them into a 3D object (.obj) digital file. That file can then be imported into a 3D application for further modeling and/or printing. The better your shots, the better your results.

Next we may take on building a 3D printer, a CNC router, animatronics project, a quadcopter or an LED animated sign. The Arduino platform is Amazing!
